Algebra in Grade 8?
Today more U.S. eighth graders take algebra than any other math course but is this a good thing? This push for universal eighth-grade algebra is based on an argument for equity, not on empirical evidence. The real evidence clearly shows that placing all students in 8th grade algebra is NOT a successful strategy. A detailed summary of the research was released by the Brown Center entitled: "The Misplaced Math Students: Lost in Eighth Grade Algebra". Read the full report here. Additionally, a NY Times piece by Andrew Hacker entitled "Is Algebra Necessary" is also a very interesting read here.
